Our History: How Two Become One PDF Imprimir Correo electrónico

The body of Christ in Stockdale dates back to the 1870’s when members of the Lord’s church moved into this area. Originally, a small congregation of Christians met north of town in the community of Alum.  The first building in town was made of rock located on the east side of Highway 123 about a block south of Highway 87. It was destroyed in 1885 by a hurricane.  The church rebuilt frame building in the same location.  In 1906, Christians began to meet at the corner of S. 6th and Salmon Streets. This two was a frame building, which was raised and turned to face the school. A red brick building was erected on the same site in 1958.  Since the old frame building had to be demolished, the church met in the Stockdale Community building until the new building was completed.  A preacher’s house followed the next year in 1959. An Annex building was added in 1968 with additions to the building and annex occurring in 1973 and 1992.

The bilingual church of Christ had its roots in the conversion of Tony Rangel, Sr. He and his wife Ella, worked with friends and family; and soon a small group of Christians were worshipping in San Antonio with the Saunders Street church of Christ.  To avoid the long drive, many Sunday evening and Wednesday nights the group (much as the early Christians did) met in each other’s homes.  This continued from about 1962 until 1969 when they decided it was time to construct a building and began meeting in Stockdale.  A small building was constructed on the west side of 9th Street on land donated by Richard and Lupe Barrera. The original iglesia de Cristo building was later enlarged.  Services were conducted in Spanish with a change to a bilingual service occurring about 1986. A new white brick auditorium was constructed around 1993.  The congregation changed its name to the bilingual church of Christ about 1998.

The time was ripe for both groups to merge into one body in the fall of 2002. The bilingual body of Christ had outgrown their location and began to plan a new building while the Salmon street congregation was planning a new annex.  After the decision was made to merge into a single body, both buildings were put up for sale and sold almost immediately.  The building on 9th Street had to be vacated quickly, so both groups came together in the Salmon Street building while construction on a new building began at 633 Highway 123 N. Christians were able to occupy their new building in the fall of 2003.
