In Matthew chapters 5 & 6 Jesus contrasts the way the Old Law had been applied, through tradition and ritual, with the message of righteousness he was preaching. According to Jesus it was no longer enough "to do" religious things, now you are going to have "to be" something more than you were.

In Matthew chapter 5 Jesus calls his followers both "salt" and "light." What he means by that my be arguable, but on thing is for sure, failure to live up to those two examples is a failure to be what he has called his disciples to be.
